We are planning to upgrade our instances from Madrid to Orlando once it is released. But I heard that it is always a good practice to upgrade the instance following n-1 . I mean a version older than the new one to be on safe side without any negative impacts. Could you please suggest us to wait until the Paris release or can we upgrade the instance in March or so once the orlando is released.

I will add that our approach is conservative. We're not a very large ServiceNow team and often times, we can provide more value to the business by spending our time performing custom development as opposed to implementing a new version of ServiceNow with features that aren't necessarily at the top of anyone's wish list.

I've always jumped a release to the latest in all organisations I've worked for. Going from an old release to the latest around the Patch 1 time. Dublin -> Fuji, Fuji->Istanbul, Istanbul->Kingston, Kingston->Madrid. Just remember to read the release notes for ALL versions that you're going through. Especially the sections on upgrade considerations. Then have a look at anything you can see in the System Definition->Fix Scripts to see if there's anything you need to run in there too. Biggest gotchas we've had recently in the Kingston to Madrid upgrade was some changes in the way workflows work (I think we relied on some niche behaviour that they tidied up). This year we'll be going Madrid->Orlando.

Peter, with your planned move from Madrid to Orlando Patch 1 (assumption based on your post), does that meet the N-1 requirement? Technically, my assumption is that you would be out of compliance once Orlando releases. Or, do they let you push the upgrade timeline out if you are moving within a month or so after initial Orlando release?

Thank you all for providing the feedback and solutions proposed. I really appreciate it and this would be a helpful information for someone who plan to upgrade in future as well:) Thanks Again.
