App Engine - Subscriptions

Hi all,

I wonder how App Engine subscriptions (licenses) work.

Specifically we are currently using CSM professional module in our instance, and recently I have been asked to use App Engine: do I need to unlock additional subscriptions/licenses or I can still use CSM licenses?

Many thanks in advance,

Tommaso

Licensing is complex, if you've already purchased then as part of your order form it'll denote the type of App Engine license you have.

App Engine has standalone licenses which are decoupled from any other product. It can also be bundled into existing licenses such as CSM to provide licensed CSM users access to App Engine's capabilities

Hi - App Engine Solution Consultant here. (i.e. Technical Sales). I can shed some light here, but you'll need to talk to your account team about your specific account entitlements. I will share information in generalities that is publicly available.

Many people confuse the term "Build it on App Engine" with "Build it using App Engine Studio". Since we are developers here, it is important to specify that these are two different things. (Syntax matters 😎)

App Engine Studio is an no-code way to develop apps typically for users that do not have traditional ServiceNow development experience. It's even easier cousin is Creator Studio. Apps built with these can be easily deployed using App Engine Management Center.

"App Engine" typically refers to the name of an entitlement called "App Engine Fulfiller". This is an entitlement that allows a user to operate as a Fulfiller on a custom table. A Fulfiller is a user that can read/write records that they did not create.

App Engine Fulfiller is a stand-alone subscription separate from ITSM, CSM, and other products.  It entitles the customer (your company) to activate App Engine products such as Creator Studio, App Engine Studio, and App Engine Management Center. These tools, while amazing, are not required to build or configure anything on the platform.

Your CSM Professional subscription would have included a certain number of "App Engine Starter" tables. These tables are intended to be used to extend functionality for your CSM Professional entitled users. The specific amount of App Engine Starter tables varies by which type of CSM you have, but you can go to "Subscription Management" in your instances and it should show you how many. If you can't find this, then check with your account team or open a Support Case and ask them for help finding the value.

Let's say for example that your CSM Pro subscription included 15 App Engine Starter tables. Anytime you deploy a table to Production, you would want to go to Subscription Management and associate the table to your CSM Pro subscription. Once you have used up the 15 tables, then you can contact your account team about upgrading your CSM Pro subscription to "CSM Pro + App Engine" which converts it so that the CSM Pro entitled users can access unlimited tables associated to CSM instead of the 15. (Yes, there are costs involved which is why you would have to contact the account team.) This would also entitle you to activate the App Engine products if you wanted to deploy and utilize them.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer any additional questions.
