How to Level Up

By doing various activities on the Community you ascend the rank ladder.  For our new members browse the site and learn all its offerings to level up.  As your journey progresses past the Expert Level only actions that show your technical expertise will be counted toward reaching the next levels.

At each level there are prefixes that further indicate the members achievements.  This is done by using data storage prefixes.  Something we think you all can identify with and needs no explanation for context 😊

This does clear up some of the confusion that happened when the new community launched. The only thing I would say is missing though is knowing where you stand in terms of being able to move up to the next level.

Also in your post you mention only certain activities will count once you get past expert level. Can you elaborate on that? I think everyone would want what they do on the community to count.

The system today does not have a leaderboard or way to show how far you are from achieving the next level.  Ideally, we would have an automated leaderboard that would show levels along with number of members who achieved it and their names/profiles.  It is something we are looking to develop.  For the short term, I've included a column in my article that shows the number of members who have achieved expert level and higher to date.

Once you reach Expert level and higher the following activities do not factor in to a member leveling up:

"Contributions, Message Views, Comments, Logins"

The intent here is that as you level up higher into the ranks it demonstrates technical knowledge and can't be achieved by simply doing activities that don't showcase this.

Hi Dan

Thanks for article. Though bit confused with awarded points? what it signifies and how relevant it's?

Huge respect to all you Patrons and Sages out there, but I think 'Mega Guru' is the coolest sounding level name, followed by 'Mega Expert'. 😆 😆

Hi, @Dan Bruhn, thanks a lot, this ranking feature is super cool for a newbie like me to get going.

Nice to see an article about this. And I do like that you've added multiple levels of ranking.

My question is why my other account that I have as a consultant, and only have to interact with Support, suddenly became Tera Expert without ever writing or interacting with any post in the community. Is that the idea?

To me - if I'm an Expert, at least I should have been contributing to the community with some posts that should be marked as helpful or a way to solve issues. But without doing so, how can I be an expert in the community?

Sure, ranking doesn't reflect once "real" knowledge, but at least that's the intention of the ranking, right?

I've made 25 posts providing advice on different things, and still every one of my posts goes for manual approval. Is this normal in Community? Is there a level where my posts don't go for manual approval every time?

Good Afternoon,

I am still not understanding the 'level up' from Level 14 to Level 12.  Aren't the Levels sequential, meaning that I should go from 11, 12, 13, 14, etc.?

Hi @Dan Bruhn,

I received a notification saying that I have leveled up to Tera Guru, yet on my profile and when posting, I see Expert. Is this a bug or a "feature"? 🙂

What level do you need to be at to be able to post Articles?

Community Alums

Before it was allowed to everyone, now it's like this:

Who can create an article

While all community members can ask questions and post comments, only certain users can create an article. Those users are MVPs, Rising Stars, Thought Leaders, and Employees. If you would like to write blogs and/or articles as a Thought Leader, please email us at community@servicenow.com.

I am a bit surprised to be honest,,,,

Hi @cmceuen - Yes, this is still the current system. Although the numbers of users who have attained each level has changed.

You can also access this page from the Community home page via: Resources and then Recognition & Rewards Program.

As I am a Tera Explorer at the moment, would this mean that I just have to explore more of the ServiceNow-community site to level up?

As @Its_Azar asked, how are these levels determined?

Simon Hendery

Mega Patron

Hi @Kebabdressing - no, you have to do more than just explore the site.

ServiceNow does not disclose the exact requirements to level up. However, reading the 'Activity to Level up' section at this link will give you a pretty good idea of what you need to do:

Since the "new community" was launched several years ago, still wondering why is it a mystery to know how many points a person has so they know how close they are to the next level?

Simon Hendery
Mega Patron

Hi @Tony K - Part of the reason for not publishing the algorithm will be that doing so would encourage people to game the system.

I still think a little more transparency would help so that everyone knows what they are missing. For example it's been said that after a certain level, some interactions don't help you level up anymore. If the only way to level up is blog posts as an example and I don't know what else I'm missing how would I ever level up?

LazardT
Tera Contributor

thank you @Dan Bruhn for sharing   a clear and detailed explanation of the leveling system within the community. It outlines the different rank levels and their corresponding prefixes effectively. it does a good job of explaining the rank levels and the activities required to progress. The inclusion of specific rank levels and the number of awarded members is informative. The use of prefixes like Tera, Giga, Mega, and Kilo adds a fun and relatable element to the ranking system, which can motivate members and improve the level of engagement. Listing the activities and their weights shows transparency in how contributions are valued, which is essential for member motivation.

I'm curious, would/could there be a way to incorporate certifications into this system?

I'd still keep the point system behind closed doors to prevent gaming the system but it would be cool to see verified and active certs recognized.

Such an helpful post w.r.t ranks.

Thanks a ton for sharing, appreciate it!!

Can you please also share about Rising Star, MVP...

Is it like after Tetra patron - we can become rising star ?

Is MVP the highest possible rank we can get in community ?

If possible, kindly share if there are any other ranks available in community.
