Split a Resource Assignment
This article explains how to use Split in the Resource Management Workspace to divide one resource assignment into two at a date you choose. Effort, rates, and actuals are kept intact.
This is useful when you need to divide a resource's allocation across different time periods, reassign work mid-stream after splitting, separate future work when actuals are posted on the past.
What "Split" means
Split Work divides an existing resource assignment into two separate assignments at a split date:
- The original assignment keeps its effort from the original start date up to, but not including, the split date. It keeps its sys_id, and its end date becomes the day before the split date.
- A new assignment is created with the effort from the split date to the original end date. It gets a new sys_id.
Split doesn't add or remove effort. It divides the existing daily allocations between the two assignments.
Before you begin
- Role required: resource_manager or it_project_manager or it_demand_manager.
- The assignment must be a user resource assignment. Group child assignments can't be split.
- The assignment must span at least 2 days. 1-day assignment can't be split.
- The split date must fall between the assignment's start and end dates.
- The split date must be after the last date with actuals (time entries).
About this task
Split is available from the row menu (⋯) of a resource assignment on a Resource Board in the Resource Management Workspace.
It works with every effort type (FTE, Hours, Person Days) and on Project Tasks, Demands, Epics, and operational work assignments. You can split an assignment more than once, including assignments that were created by a previous split.
Key behavior: The daily allocations from the split date onward move to the new assignment. Both assignments are then rolled up again from daily allocations, so their effort, cost, and FTE values match their own date ranges.
Procedure
- Navigate to Workspaces > Resource Management Workspace and open a Resource Board.
- Set the calendar view (Week or Month) and the effort view (Hours, FTE, or Person Days).
- Find the resource assignment row you want to split.
- Select the ellipsis (⋯) menu on the row.
- Select Split.
- Review the dialog, which shows:
- Task Name
- Resource Name
- RA Start Date
- RA End Date
- Enter the Split Date, the date the new assignment should start.
- Select Split to confirm. The board refreshes and shows two assignment rows.
Worked examples
Example 1: FTE assignment, even distribution

Before the split, there is one assignment:

2024-08-12 → 2024-08-16 |
8 h × 5 days |

2024-08-19 → 2024-08-23 |

8 h × 5 days |

240 h (30 working days × 8 h) |
After the split, there are two assignments:

25 × 8 h |
200 h |

Key Takeaway: Split divides the existing daily allocations at the split date. The total effort (240 h) is unchanged across the two assignments.
Example 2: Hours assignment, uneven daily contour

After the split:

18 h (4 + 8 + 6) |
|
New |
2024-08-08 → 2024-08-09 |
16 h (8 + 8 ) |
The daily contour is kept exactly as it was. Split moves the existing daily values and doesn't spread effort evenly across the new range.
Key Takeaway: Split moves the existing daily values as they are. Split functionality retains the contour.
Behavior reference
What each assignment keeps after a split
- Start date: The original assignment keeps its start date. The new assignment starts on the split date.
- End date: The original assignment ends on the day before the split date. The new assignment keeps the original end date.
- Effort type: The original assignment keeps its effort type, and the new assignment uses the same effort type.
- Effort value: Each assignment holds only the effort that falls in its own date range.
- Group, role, and skill: The original assignment keeps its group, role, and skill, and the new assignment uses the same values.
- Rate override: The original assignment keeps its rate override, and it's copied to the new assignment.
- Rate model: Both assignments use the same project-level rate model.
- Resource status: The original assignment keeps its resource status, and it's copied to the new assignment.
- Actuals (time entries): The original assignment keeps all its actuals. The new assignment starts with 0 actuals.
How the rollup works
- The existing resource_allocation_daily records are divided between the two assignments at the split date.
- Aggregate hours and cost are recalculated on each resource_allocation record.
- The recalculated values are synced back to each resource_assignment record (effort, person days, FTE).
Related data is updated as well: the weekly and monthly resource aggregate tables, resource plans, and effort estimates.
Schedules
Split works with standard and custom user schedules, such as a standard 8-5, Monday/Wednesday/Friday only, 10 hours a day, half days, and once a month. Each assignment keeps the daily values that fall in its own range.

Limitations and known constraints
- Split isn't available on group assignments, it is available only on user assignments.
- Split isn't available on single-day assignments. The start date must differ from the end date.
- The split date must be after the last actuals date.
- Assignment dates must be within the task's date range. This doesn't apply to operational work assignments.
- The task must have start and end dates. This doesn't apply to operational work assignments.
- The new assignment gets a new sys_id. The original keeps its sys_id with a shorter date range.
