ServiceNow has published a comprehensive guide to vibe coding and AI-assisted development on the ServiceNow AI Platform. It covers everything from tool selection (such as Build Agent vs. Now Assist for Creator) to environment setup, app development workflows, testing, and deployment — plus a library of example prompts. Whether you're new to the platform or a seasoned developer adding AI to your workflow, this new guide is your central reference.
We at ServiceNow have been following the community conversation around vibe coding closely, and today we’re sharing something we’ve been working on: a comprehensive guide to vibe coding and AI-assisted development on the ServiceNow AI Platform.
Whether you’ve been experimenting with Build Agent, exploring Now Assist for Creator, or trying to understand how the AI-powered development tools fit together, this guide is designed to be your central reference.
What’s in the guide?
This new vibe coding and AI-assisted development guide is a holistic resource, not documentation for a single product. It maps the entire AI-assisted development landscape on the ServiceNow AI Platform and provides links to product docs for additional information. Here’s how it’s structured:
- A development spectrum from fully autonomous code generation to AI-assisted development, and a tool comparison matrix to help you choose the right approach
- How the ServiceNow AI Platform’s built-in governance sets it apart from standalone AI coding tools
- A setup checklist covering environment configuration, licenses, plugins, and sandbox preparation
- Build Agent in depth: what it does, where to access it, and how it behaves differently in ServiceNow Studio and the ServiceNow IDE
- Now Assist for Creator skills: app generation, flow generation, code assist, catalog item creation, and more
- App refinement workflows in ServiceNow Studio and the ServiceNow IDE
- Testing and deployment, including ATF integration and deployment pipeline options
- A developer-oriented Now Assist skill reference and a library of example prompts for building apps, adding security, and embedding governance requirements
Since our products evolve quickly to adapt to the digital landscape, we plan on updating the new vibe coding guide on a regular basis, so keep checking back and let us know what you think!
Why vibe code on ServiceNow?
There are many tools available for vibe coding and AI-assisted development. What ServiceNow offers that generic tools cannot is context, including governance.
Build Agent has direct access to your instance’s data models, ACLs, business rules, and automation patterns. It recognizes ServiceNow-specific constructs and generates code that fits your environment rather than generic boilerplate that requires adapting. Because governance is embedded in the workflow, every app you create includes audit trails, security controls, and compliance checks by default.
The guide covers this in depth, including a section on the platform’s advantages over standalone AI coding tools and a full breakdown of the governance framework.
A note on the terminology
“Vibe coding” means different things to different developers. Some want to describe an app in plain English and let AI handle the rest. Others prefer AI as a collaborator while maintaining ownership of the final code. The ServiceNow AI Platform supports both ends of that spectrum, and the guide helps you identify which approach and what tools best fit your situation.
Who is this for?
- Developers new to ServiceNow who are approaching the platform through AI-assisted workflows
- Experienced platform developers looking to incorporate AI into their existing development practice
- Admins and low-code builders exploring what’s possible with Build Agent and Now Assist
- Anyone trying to understand when to use Build Agent vs. Now Assist for Creator, or ServiceNow Studio vs. the ServiceNow IDE
