assignment group field is blank

I am trying to update a field called Original Assignment Group ... we are trying to update the FIRST assignment group to be set on an incident for reporting.  

I am searching through the metric_instance table and pulling the earliest update for the assignment group field.  

It looks like I retrieve the record .. and actually add it in the field .. and when I group by this field I see it has been updated. .. BUT when I go to list view I get an empty field.. though if _ filter on the empty field it pops up with one of the missing groups.  

On sys_user_group the name field is set to display=true ... but this does not help.

Any idea why SN thinks there is data in this field but it will not
