Career Transition From a NOC Engineer to ServiceNow Developer

Hello everyone, I’m currently transitioning my career from a NOC (Network Operations Center) Engineer to a ServiceNow Developer. In my previous role, I worked on monitoring, troubleshooting, and ensuring service reliability, which gave me a strong foundation in IT operations and service management.

Right now, I’m actively learning the Application Developer path in ServiceNow to build my skills in scripting, workflows, and platform customization. I’m based in Hyderabad, India, and I would really appreciate guidance from the community on:

  • The most valuable certifications and skills for beginners (e.g., CSA, CAD).

  • Recommended learning resources and best practices for development.

  • Suggestions on where to look for entry-level ServiceNow Developer roles in India, or companies/partners that hire freshers.

Any advice, resources, or tips based on your experience would mean a lot as I move forward in this transition. Thank you!

Start with CSA → CAD, keep building hands-on projects in your personal developer instance, and apply widely to partners/consulting firms. Your NOC experience + ServiceNow certifications will make you stand out as a strong beginner.

Hi  @RaviReddy7590

Start with Javascript (Learn Javascript on the Now platform from Chuk tomasi), after it move to SN Scripting. Useful resources:- 1) developer.servicenow.com --> Learn (https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/guides/xanadu/developer-program/dev-program/dev-program-gu...)

2) ServiceNow university - Scripting in ServiceNow Fundamentals course

Hi @RaviReddy7590

Greetings!!

Being a ServiceNow trainer, I’m happy to share my thoughts. The first thing to understand is that transitioning into ServiceNow is not just a role transition—it’s also a mindset transition.

As you mentioned, you’ve been working as a NOC Engineer and now want to start with ServiceNow. Here’s the path I’d suggest:

  1. Start with CSA – This is the foundation for anyone beginning in ServiceNow. CSA will give you platform-level understanding, depth, terminology, and the confidence to explore other important areas.

  2. Move on to CAD – This is where you’ll learn scripting. Understanding when, what, where, and how to script is key. CAD is your best place to build that knowledge.

I usually don’t recommend rushing into certifications immediately after CAD. Instead, spend time learning, practicing, and strengthening your scripting skills. ServiceNow scripting is mostly JavaScript-based, and there are plenty of free resources available to help you get started.

Hi @RaviReddy7590 ,

Below is the 6 months plan you can follow for ( I have followed the same )

Make developer website, Now Learning, and Community part of your daily routine..

Learn JavaScript (ServiceNow scripting is built on this foundation)

Learn HTML, CSS for Service Portal and custom widgets

Complete Snow Fundamentals, CAD and ITSM courses

Watch free end to end courses or trainings available on YouTube.

Master core concepts – CMDB, Integrations, Flow Designer, Portal customization, App Engine, and Cross-scoping

Watch free YouTube videos on your favourite ServiceNow topics

Pro tips (Join local ServiceNow Meetups / Developer User Groups to connect with like minded individuals)

>> Once you complete these and feel confident, go ahead with CSA and CAD..

Afterwards, Move towards trending modules to stand out from the crowd and go ahead with higher packages…

IT Asset Management (HAM/SAM Pro) high demand in enterprises.

Security Modules (SecOps, GRC, IRM) high skillset, fewer experts in the market.

** More value = more market demand = better package **

I hope you understand..
