Certificate based authentication without smart cards

Hello,

is it possible to authenticate a user via certificate without having smart cards?

I have imported our Root and Intermediate Cert into sys_ca_certificate.

I got my webuser client certificate stored into sys_user_certificate.

Is there something I have missed or is this only possible with a smart card?

Is there a workaround?

Hi @akrieger76

May those steps help you

Certificate-based authentication for user interface logins

Enable end users to use PIV (Personal Identity Verification) or CAC (Common Access Card) cards to log in to the ServiceNow AI Platform or Service Portal instead of using a user name and password.

Certificate-based authentication

Set up Certificate-based authentication

Hi @Rafael Batistot

Thanks for your answer. I have done those steps  already.

I see the issue in "Enable end users to use PIV (Personal Identity Verification) or CAC (Common Access Card) cards"  ... we don't use any cards nor do we have any card readers.

So if this can only be used with cards then it is not useable for us. What I was thinking of  is when you open the web page like the Portal then a window is coming up where you can choose your certificate to login.
