Custom action in Flow Designer

Hello Team

I'm having difficulty understanding the input/output Custom action concept in Flow Designer. I'm new to flow designer. It sounds easy until you are put into a project to build some custom actions. I tried to follow many other tutorials to build custom actions. They all seemed to make sense because they did all the thinking for you. I would like someone to explain to me in easy English terms or some analogies that I can easily relate to. Thanks for your help.
