Difference between email layout and email template?

Can someone please explain to me the difference between "Email Template" and "Email Layout"? I wanted to create reusable email template for email notifications. Which one should I be using?

I too was wondering about the difference. I have determined that the layout is a border around the contents of your email notification. I have attached an example of with layout and without layout. When you create your email template is when you will select the layout to use.
