Find the duration in which the field had stored a value

Hi All,

I have a requirement to find the duration in which how long the state field had been assigned to "In progress". 
Saw some articles suggesting to go with metric definition. Can anyone please explain in detail on how to write the script in metric definition and how to fetch that duration value from script include?

Have you checked out the Metric Definitions that come OOTB? It's possible you don't need a script and could copy an existing definition that comes OOTB like this one:
