French topic path not matching English topic path for a catalog item

We have an issue where a French topic path does not match the English topic path for the same catalog item (in almost all catalog items).
For example:
English: IT/Hardware/Laptop
French: IT/Laptop
It seems to skip the middle topic which impacts the searching for the item within the topic in the portal. If we create a new topic under Hardware and use it instead of the Laptop topic, then the topic path in French is OK - however we do not wish to recreate several topics and reassign the items..
Does anyone have any ideas?

how is the taxonomy structured, is the same for both languages?
There might be a condition for the Hardware topic. Can you share it for a review?

Hello,
The taxonomy is structured the same for both languages, it was first created in English and then translated within the same records. There are no conditions.
