How do we add flow variables to a flow?

We are trying to create a flow variable within a flow to hold the name of the flow for logging purposes. We can't figure out how to add flow variables to the flow. I am including a screenshot. I see the "plus" button but it doesn't work.

Hi Myron,

The first question which comes to my mind is, are the Flow variables present before? Have you created them before for any flow? 

Click on + and you will be able to create any. Once created, you will find them on the right side of flow under Flow Variables.
