How does mid-server communicate with RODC on another host for user import

We have a mid-server installed on a Windows server (say x) sitting in a different domain. The RODC hosting the AD is sitting in a different host (say Y) in a different domain. How does the mid-server communicate with the RODC sitting on host Y and enable user import into ServiceNow via the mid-server?
