Moving existing variables into a variable set

Hi everyone,

By any chance, is there a way to move existing variables in a catalog item into a variable set?   I'm working on a fairly complex catalog item that currently contains hundreds of variables and we are looking to merge it with another catalog item.   This current item also has a secondary catalog item to add extra things to the request, so those new merged variables will need to reflect there.   The best way to accomplish this is to have variable sets that we can simply place in the secondary item.

Has anyone had experience in doing this?   Any information would be very helpful.

Thank you,

Amandah

As an added clean up; blank out the 'catalog item' field on the variables that were included in the variable set.   This will eliminate them from showing on the Catalog Item.   They will only show when the Variable set is included.

Variable should either be 'part of a variable set' or 'individual for a catalog item', so only one of the fields should be populated.

I am sorry, but I don't understand. Amandah said "create the new variable set, go into the "Item Variables" section, filter by the Catalog Item, then check off the appropriate variables and do an "Update Selected"?"

I created a new variable set. But I don't know where to find the "Item Variables" section. There is a Variables tab or section, and an Item Diagnostic link, but no "Item Variables" section, and no sign of a way to filter anything.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Hi Mark,

You're looking from the wrong area.   The "Item Variables" I'm referring to is a module in the Service Request Application.   Once you're there, you would filter by catalog item name and add the Variable Set to each record, then remove the Catalog Item from the "Cat item" field.

OK. We are getting somewhere. But now I don't know what you mean by "add

the Variable Set to each record".

Go into the variable record and remove the Cat item and add whatever Variable Set you created instead.   It will transfer the variable from the catalog item directly into the variable set.   Just make sure the variable set you're choosing is associated with the catalog item itself.

I tried putting the Variable set in the Cat Item box after clicking on the

link for the install variable in the last message and I got this message:

Thank you for your patience.
