Prevent duplicate catalog items from being added to the cart (Service Portal)

Hello,
Since requesting items on the portal can only be done for one user at a time, it doesn't make sense for duplicates of the same item to be allowed to be added to the cart for a single request. Some guidance would be much appreciated.
I'm okay with disabling the add to cart button once it's been clicked so it would at least require the user to reload the page in order to add the same item to the cart, but ideally, I would like the add to cart button to check the current contents of the cart and if it see's that same item is already present, prevent the item from being added and display an info message.
