Project Workspace – no lookup icon (magnifying glass) on reference fields when creating financial re

Hi everyone,

In Project Workspace, the reference fields on the creation forms for financial records don't show the magnifying glass, so I can't open the lookup list and browse all available records. Clicking the field only shows "Recent Selections"; any other record can only be found by typing.

Affected records:

- Cost Plans (e.g. Cost type field)

- Benefit Plans

- Non-Monetary Benefit Plans

When I create one of these records from the Financials tab, for example via "New cost plan" or the equivalent button for benefit plans, a side panel opens and the reference fields have no lookup icon. The same happens when I use "New" on the related lists for these records in the Details tab. Other related lists on the project, such as Requirements, behave as expected: when I create those records from Project Workspace, the reference fields show the magnifying glass. In the Classic UI, the magnifying glass is also shown correctly on the forms of the affected records.

So the issue seems to affect only the financial records in Project Workspace, rather than the fields themselves.

My assumption is that Project Workspace uses dedicated creation components for financial records (e.g. the cost plan side panel with cost distribution, unit cost, quantity etc.) instead of the standard workspace form, and that these components simply don't support the reference lookup.

Question:

Is this expected behavior of the financials panels, or is there a setting / property to enable the lookup icon? Does anyone know a workaround?

I replicated this on my PDI (Australia Patch 2, Project Workspace 7.2.1) and I see the same thing.

Why it happens

The cost plan and benefit plan panel is not the normal workspace form. It is a separate financials form built inside Project Workspace, and that form does not turn on the lookup (magnifying glass) for reference fields. In the screenshot below, the Cost type field has no magnifier, only a dropdown. The same is true for every reference field in the panel, including Product model and the fiscal period fields.

The fields themselves are fine. I checked the dictionary and nothing on them hides the lookup. That’s why the magnifier still shows in Classic UI.

For comparison, New on Requirements opens the normal workspace form. There, the reference fields have the magnifier:

What you can do in the panel

• Small tables like Cost type show the full list when you click the field, with recent selections at the top.
• Bigger tables show only the first 25 records. Product model shows “Showing 1-25 of 202” and does not load more:

To find anything else, type part of the name. The search covers the whole table.

Workarounds

• Type in the field to search.
• Use the Classic form (cost_plan.do / benefit_plan.do) when you need to browse all records.
• Raise a HI case to confirm whether this is expected behavior or a known issue in 7.5.0. If Support confirms it’s by design, raise an idea on the Idea Portal to ask for the lookup in the financials panel. Changing the panel in UI Builder is possible, but it’s a ServiceNow store app, so you would have to maintain that change through every upgrade.

I didn’t find any property to turn the lookup on. My PDI can only install 7.2.1, so a HI case is the best way to get a confirmed answer for 7.5.0.
