Pulling variables from a request item into a catalog task using a script

I'm running a workflow which generates a task based on the entries on a table using a script.

This workflow is referenced by a request item with a series of variables entered on it.

I would like a way to pull the variables from the request item and make them visible to the user on the catalog task preferably in the variable editor.

As i am using a script to generate the task i'm hoping for a few lines of code that will allow me to do this.

I'm not using the catalog task object in the workflow and i am aware that it can do this.

Has anyone come across this requirement before or have any ideas?
