I took the wrong type of xml backup of my update set.
I only took backup of the updateset info, not of the updates in the update set.
Is there a way to retrieve the changes in these update sets?

No, mate. Once the clone is completed, there is generally no way to recover the previous state unless you have taken a backup of the instance before the clone.
The only possible option would be to check with the ServiceNow Support team by logging a case and asking if they can restore or recover anything from their side.
However, in general, we do not take a full backup of the development instance before every clone, so recovery may not be possible. @asd22

Hi @asd22
If your update set wasn't backed up during the clone, you cannot retrieve it locally.
Try these two recovery options:
- Check a target instance: If you already moved the update set to a Test or QA instance before the clone, you can re-retrieve it from there.
- Check for XML: Search your local computer for an exported XML version of the update set.
Note: ( Not tried this option ever).. If your update set was very important, recreate will take lots of efforts (months), in that case Submit a case to ServiceNow Support to request rolling back the instance clone ( Though its not Recommended)

Ahoy @asd22,
The updates will be lost if not exported to XML.
There's a possibility to revert the cloning back, but it's for limited period of time only.
It happened to me recently that there was cloning from TEST to DEV without informing us so I lost all my progress in DEV. We requested to take it back before the cloning and it brought back my updates.
Talk to your platform owner whether it is easier to redo the lost updates or if it was complex update set, decdide accordingly.
