Hello everyone,
I'm hoping someone may be able to help or point me in the right direction. We are trying to connect Tableau Desktop (application is on specific computers, not web based) to ServiceNow (Utah, latest patch) via the "connector" that is built into the Tableau Desktop application.
In short, Tableau only asks for the URL, the username (local account on ServiceNow), the password and that is it. I have reviewed the information on Tableau's website for the connector (Tableau ServiceNow Link) and we have everything setup as it shows. However, the local account is NOT an admin account. We really do not want to elevate the privileges like that. As far as I can tell, this isn't necessary.
The user can connect with the Tableau Desktop, but it keeps timing out saying that the "time limit has been exceeded". I have looked this information up (as well as the actual error number) and it is no help at all.
Has anyone been able to use the Tableau Desktop ServiceNow connector effectively and able to connect? Did you have to do anything regarding any proxy to set it up? Anything special on the backend of ServiceNow to get it to allow the connection to work?
Thank you for any help!

Hi @MGD_1
Were you successful connecting to ServiceNow from Tableau with a non admin account. If so please let me know what roles you had for the service account.

@Karthick Nagara - No, we still are not able to connect Tableau to ServiceNow with a non-admin account. However, we believe it is a proxy error/issue that we are having and may not affect other people trying to do the same thing.
However, here are the roles we are using for the Tableau/Webfocus local user account:
agent_workspace_user; api_analytics_read; app_service_user; asset; canvas_user; catalog_editor; category_manager; certification; cmdb_ms_editor; cmdb_ms_user; cmdb_query_builder; cmdb_query_builder_read; cmdb_read; contact_user; contract_manager; data_manager_user; decision_table_reader; dependency_views; email_client_template_read; email_composer; export_rest_api; fd_read_operations; financial_mgmt_user; fiscal_calendar_user; flow_designer; flow_operator; graphql_chema_admin; interaction_agent; inventory_user; itil; model_manager; openapi_admin; pa_viewer; report_user; rest_api_builder; rest_api_explorer; rest_service; snc_internal; snc_platform_rest_api_access; sn_apm.apm_user; sn_bm_client.benchmark_data_viewer; sn_change_read; sn_change_write; sn_cimaf.sn_cimaf_read; sn_cmdb_editor; sn_cmdb_user; sn_comm_management.comm_plan_viewer; sn_gd_guidance.guidance_user; sn_gf.goal_user_read; sn_gf.strategy_planner; sn_gf.strategy_planner_read; sn_incident_read; sn_incident_write; sn_nb_action.next_best_action_user; sn_problem_read; sn_problem_write; sn_publications_recipients_list_user; sn_publications_recipients_user; sn_reacf.sn_remedial_action_read; sn_request_approver_read; sn_request_read; sn_request_write; sn_sow.sow_user; sn_sttrm_condition_read; sn_vul.manually_initiate_rescan; sn_vul.read_assigned; sn_vul.read_effort; sn_vul.read_watch_topic; sn_vul.remediation_owner; sn_vul.update_assigned_to; sn_vul.update_assignment_group; sn_vul.update_state; sn_vul.write_assigned; survery_reader; task_editor; template_editor; template_read_global; tracked_file_reader; uxframework_user; view_changer; viz_creator; web_service_admin; workspace_user; x_evt_zos_info.user; x_inipgh_lucy.editor; x_inpgh_lucy.reader
The only admin is the Web Service admin as you will see above. You may not need access to all of these roles, but I put them in there because they are on our list for the user.
I hope this helps!
Take care,
Mat

Good question Mat! 🙂 Following up on this one... with a successful connection, it is now taking a lifetime time to pull back large data sets within the BI Tool Tableau. Does ServiceNOW Tech's or anyone in the community have any thoughts on what we can do to speed this up (do we need a local copy of the data?, should we tackle this a different way?).
Also, is the community of practice successfully using other BI tools like Webfocus/PowerBI/others, or are folks simply relying on SN's reports?
