Time Worked field rapidly "catches up"

We have a form with the Time Worked timer field. The user manually starts the timer running and switches to another browser tab (Edge, Chrome). When the user returns to the ServiceNow tab the timer begins to "catch up" rapidly. The time counted counts up rapidly until it gets to the current time. 
During the "catch up" the other elements in the form are not responsive

 

The sample video shows this occurring. The "Timer" field is in the lower-right. When returning from another tab, the Timer field rapidly counts up from 37 minutes to 44 minutes. 
In the sample this occurs quite rapidly, however if the user has been on another tab for an extended period the "catch up" period is much longer. Can this be mitigated?
