This might be a really dumb question, but here goes nothing:
I'm learning how to retrieve an update set from a remote instance. I understand what a sub-production instance is (a test, dev or UAT instance), but I can't wrap my head around what the course means by "a remote instance."

So there will be two things you will see while moving update set
Local and Remote system.
Local system is the instance, where you are moving the update set from
Remote system is the instance from where you are importing the update set.
So if you are moving update set from DEV -> TEST , DEV is Remote and TEST is local

It's the same thing. All your sub-prod instances can be configured as Remote instance to import update sets.
You need to configure sub-prod instance details from which you want to import update sets using OOB integration/automation. They call it Remote Instance.
