Whether label name change for choice list will update for all the tickets including closed tickets.

Hi all,
I have a requirement where you have to update the wording of options available in choice list of particular field on the form. I have renamed the labels of the choice list as per requirement and left the Value field unchanged. In value field the options are not integers and it is in text. As per requirement when this changes are moved to prod all the options in the field should be updated with new label name including existing and closed tickets. My question is whether it will update all the records as i have changed only label name and value field undisturbed or it will have any issues. Please suggest me best practice.

Sorry for bumping this older post, but my current understanding from my work has been that modifying labels should show on records just fine. The underlying values being modified might present some level of risk.
I found this post looking for any words of caution around what should be checked when changing values themselves as well as labels. I did a code search for them and didn't find anything, but I am not sure how much more I should check out of caution. Modifying only one of them is certain to give me an eye twitch.
