ServiceNow is a founding member of a new organization whose purpose is to advance value stream-centric ways of working amongst business and technology teams so that they can lead their organizations to higher performance in a new era of business.

It is our view that a successful approach to Value Stream Management (VSM) can help small DevOps successes to grow and scale across the enterprise, enabling them to help deliver better business outcomes – whether it is a better experience for the organization's customers or an improved work environment for employees.

This is increasingly vital given digital transformation has never been a more important imperative for companies to thrive. With VSM, teams can tackle the DevOps challenges that continue to hamper organizations as they modernize. And larger companies with mixed technology backgrounds can now take a unified approach to understanding the software process from idea creation to value delivered, and everything in between.

Unfortunately, most companies don’t have the luxury of ‘starting again’ in a cloud native world and simple ‘lift and shift’ strategies aren’t effective. While refactoring into the cloud, a comprehensive approach to VSM leverages the investments of prior manual processes as they transform through automation and artificial intelligence. With VSM identifying and resolving bottlenecks, companies can realize significant increases in their rate of releases, even when they need to fit within corporate processes for governance.

Having been named a leader in the Forrester Wave for Value Stream Management Solutions in 2020, ServiceNow looks forward to working with other enterprises and individuals in the consortium to further VSM practices and platforms, using our expertise to promote wider adoption within the larger industry.

Hi Richard,

what is the relationship to IT4IT Standard Reference Architecture and it's value stream focus? I'm just wondering why to have another value stream approach if there is one where SN is involved in already for years in the Industry Consortium The Open Group an in particular in creating the upcoming version IT4IT 3.0? BTW> Both versions and especial 3.0 are strongly determined by the DevOps approach.

Involved are Mark Bodman, Dave Wright, Chris Pope, Michelle Supper, Kees van den Brink.

Will be there 2 different approaches for the same topic?

Thank you.
Jan

Hi Jan,

This is a great question and the short answer is that this does not alter our approach or our support for IT4IT, nor does it alter the way we position and represent Value Streams or Value Stream Management. Many of the companies in the consortium also have a relationship with IT4IT and, like them, we see this as complementary.

For example, Mark has been intricately involved in the data model for ServiceNow DevOps and IT Business Management, the products that provide the bulk of our Value Stream Management story.

By the way, this industry consortium was going to be 'a thing' with or without ServiceNow's involvement and we're happy to be a founding member with the ability to help steer cooperation between the activities of the consortium and The Open Group.

Regards, Richard
