Introduction
Dynamic Topic Microsites enables organizations to create richer topic page experiences with HTML content to better guide, engage and inform employees. Dynamic Topic Microsites are tied into the taxonomy-driven portal navigation, unlike legacy standalone microsites, to make it easy for the employee to discover them.
This capability is enabled through the introduction of a new content type, called “Rich Content”. This new content type comes with a drag-and-drop editor that is designed to enable non-technical content authors to create their HTML content with pre-defined layouts and components including texts, images, videos, links, and action buttons.
The Rich Content feature is integrated into Employee Center Pro’s content authoring and publishing capabilities (i.e., Content Library), so authors of microsites can leverage the same targeting, scheduling, distributed ownership, and governance capabilities that is already available to them for other employee communications.
Microsites are pre-enabled on Topic Pages – authors add rich content to any topic page by simply targeting a topic during the publishing process. Admins can also create custom or standalone microsites by adding the Rich Content widget to an existing (or new) portal page so that non-technical users can publish rich content to the page.
Standalone microsites as Topic Pages - With the November 2024 release, Taxonomy Topic pages can now include Rich Content without connected support resources, enabling them to function as standalone microsites. Previously, organizations had to create custom pages for topics without support content, but now this is no longer necessary. The visibility of these microsites will depend on Rich Content access or user criteria applied at the topic level. They will also appear in the sub-topics widget on the parent topic page and the popular topics widget on the homepage.
Requirements for Standalone Microsites– The Standalone microsites as Topic pages enhancement is auto-enabled upon upgrading the Employee Experience Taxonomy plugin (version 28.0.7) and the Employee Center Pro plugin (version 33.0.2) with the Yokohama Family release. |
Drag & Drop Layout for Rich Content Editor - The Rich Content Editor comes with three pre-built layouts - vertical card layout, horizontal card layout, or side-by-side layout – for faster and more consistent authoring of Topic Microsites. Instead of starting from scratch, content authors can simply drag and drop these layouts onto the canvas and add their content to it.
Portal Shortcuts to author Microsites- Content authors no longer need to navigate to the back end ServiceNow platform UI to edit microsite content (i.e. Rich Content) - we have enabled a shortcut on Topic pages for content authors to directly initiate editing or even authoring new rich content from there, making it easier to manage microsites . Content authors who have edit rights, will now see a button to toggle their page view from that of a viewer to an author mode.
Additionally, authors can now view and edit HTML/CSS source code directly within the editor, either at the element level or for the entire canvas. To avoid the risks associated with unrestricted access to source code, we’ve implemented a platform-level sanitizer that raises an error if it detects an issue with a potentially harmful scripting, although specific details about the problematic code may not be provided. Admins also have the flexibility to enable or disable access to source code as per their security preferences.
For more best practice recommendations around accessibility, responsiveness and other copy paste edit controls, please see this best practice article for Rich Content Editor.
All these above mentioned enhancements related to Rich Content Editor & Dynamic Topic Microsites are available by upgrading the Employee Center Pro (version 34.0.2) |

Hello, thanks for the great video, sorry I missed the live presentation. At about 40:43 on the video, when publishing the styled content to the widget 'Topic Rich Content', I do not see that in my list of widgets. We are on Utah Patch 5 with Content Publishing version 29.0.8. Am I missing something?

@jasonkist - Rich Content widget is added OOB on Topic Pages - Could you please check your Employee Topic (Employee_taxonomy_topic) page through the page designer to see if Rich Content (CD) widget is added there or not? If not, you could simply drag and drop it from the widget list and then proceed with publishing.

Thank you for the prompt response. I did have to drag in the 'Rich Content (CD)' widget onto the page. Everything is working well now, neat functionality 🙂

Can I search for content on a Microsite. For example: if my microsite has a list of policies and I wanted to search for "workplace policy" would it take me to the microsite?

Any plans for templates to be available for microsite builds like they already are for News which also uses the rich content editor?

@SmritiGupta I have the widget on our employee topic page but when I publish, it doesn't show up in the portal. Any thoughts on why this would be happening?

From my point of view, a microsite is just a page I create as developer, and then I add some of the fancy content widgets on it (Rich Content, Content Experience, News, etc.) and then I am done.
Content can then be added to the page in PROD by Content Editors through the Content Publishing / Governance framework. I think AI search would be able to find that standalone page.
But, if you change the category of the page to "Taxonomy" you can create a new topic in your Taxonomy and use your page as template. (Connected content will not be displayed thow of course). But this way you can navigate to your microsite and it is not lost in space.
Creating a quick link would also work as alternative I guess.
