Product Overview & Vision

What Employee Slate is, how it relates to existing products, and ServiceNow's strategic direction.

  1.       What is Employee Slate and how does it differ from Employee Center (Employee Center) / Employee Center Pro?

Employee Slate is ServiceNow’s new, next-generation employee experience designed to be conversation-first, hyper-personalized, and natively powered by Moveworks. It is built on a new platform tech stack, called AIUX framework, built ground up to support a consumer-grade omni channel experience. With Employee Slate, ServiceNow is also expanding into its capabilities to drive role-based productivity, along with everyday productivity for employees.

Employee Slate is a fundamentally different design paradigm from traditional portals, like Employee Center. Instead of relying on predominantly click-based or browse-based experiences content discovery, Employee Slate is focused on the employee starting a conversation and AI naturally understand the intent and requirements to help the employee reach the desired outcome.

2.    What tech stack is Employee Slate built on? And why?

ServiceNow has a built a new platform-level tech stack called AI-UX Framework. It is built on Google’s Lit.js library for building web components, which was selected due to its interoperability capabilities and fast performance. On the server side, this framework is built off-glide, using Kubernetes (SNoK8s – ServiceNow Kubernetes) to enable faster deployment and scaling of applications.

Licensing and Availability

How Employee Slate is licensed, what SKUs are required, and where to get pricing details.

6.     How is Employee Slate Licensed? Is it available as a standalone SKU?

Employee Slate is not sold as a standalone product. It is a component that is bundled inside ServiceNow EmployeeWorks and AI-packages. It is available in base and premium tiers: Employee Slate Foundation and Employee Sate Advanced. For more information on where and how Employee Slate is bundled, please reach out to your accounts team.

7.     What is the difference between the foundation and advanced tiers of Employee Slate?
The base tier of Employee Slate is designed for everyday productivity and an AI-powered experience for service delivery. The premium tier – Employee Slate Advanced – adds additional capabilities for driving portal consolidation and full intranet replacement.

Employee Slate Foundation

An AI-powered employee experience to boost everyday productivity and provide AI-native service experience

Employee Slate Advanced

App Launcher - Easy access to all your tools and systems integrated with your single-sign-on system

AI-Native Service Experience - Hosts knowledge and catalog replacing service portals

Approvals & Tasks - All tasks, approvals, and requests in a unified inbox

8.     What applications are associated with Employee Slate?
There are three top-level applications associated with Employee Slate – two at the foundation level and one for the advanced tier.

Foundation Tier Applications (customers would need to deploy only one of these)

  • Employee Slate for Moveworks: This is the application customers would need to deploy if they are using Employee Slate powered by Moveworks.
  • Employee Slate for Now Assist: This is the application customers would need to deploy if they are using Employee Slate powered by Now Assist.

Advanced Tier Application:

  • Employee Slate Advanced: This is the application that customers would need to deploy on top of either of the base tier applications to get the delta capabilities packaged in the advanced tier.

9.    Is Employee Slate Advanced a separate deployment or experience from Employee Slate Foundation?

No. Employee Slate Advanced is not a separate experience; it is simply an add-on application that customers would need to deploy on either of the base tier applications - Employee Slate for Moveworks or Employee Slate for Now Assist – to add the additional advanced capabilities into the base tier deployment.

10.   My organization has Employee Slate foundation through ITSM AI SKU and Employee Slate Advanced through HRSD AI SKU licenses. Which tier should we deploy?

You should deploy Employee Slate Advanced licensed through HRSD SKU for both IT and HR. Note that if you license HRSD for a partial population, then the advanced tier capabilities must only be activated for the licensed users.

11.     Is Moveworks required for Employee Slate?

Moveworks is the recommended AI experience to get the best-in-class employee experience with Employee Slate. However, Employee Slate does work with Now Assist. Now Assist is available as an alternative for scenarios where Moveworks is not yet available (e.g., FedRAMP High environments).

12.   Can customers bring their own Conversational AI tool , e.g. Gemini, to power Employee Slate?

No. Customers can deploy Employee Slate only with Moveworks or Now Assist.

13.   Is Employee Slate available with Pro Plus and Enterprise Plus SKUs?

Yes, Employee Slate’s Now Assist version is packaged with Pro Plus and Enterprise Plus SKUs

14.   How does Employee Slate impact Assist Consumption rate?

The Employee Slate experience — powered by both Moveworks and Now Assist — consumes Assists, since Employee Slate is predominantly a conversation-based experience and users are more likely to use AI skills and agents to resolve their needs. However, not every conversational interaction consumes an Assist. See the Now Assist Overview document to map out the number of Assists against each AI skill usage.

Below are the skills and agents available within Employee Slate:

Employee Slate relies on skills & agents built in Now Assist:

  • Skills
    • Smart Priority Score Generator
    • Approval Checklist Generation
    • Standard Ticket Summary
    • Text to Widget creation

  • Agents (available with Employee Slate for Moveworks)
    • Task Management
    • Request Management
    • People Search – Uses Knowledge graph search skill

Note that Moveworks also consumes Assists as per the Now Assist Overview document.

15.   What skill is needed to enable vibe coding for widget builder? And is it an additional license?

AIUX platform has built a new Text-to-Widget skill that allows admins to vide code new widgets for the canvas. In the future, this skill will be made available with Build Agent to further streamline the builder experience.

The text-to widget skill requires the customer to be licensed to Now Assist for Creator application, through any of the applicable App Engine SKUs. In the absence of this license, admins can use the same Widget Builder UI to manually code the widgets.

16.   Do we need to be on the Australia release to install Employee Slate?

No. It supports Zurich Patch 9 (ZP9). Support for Australia will be added in our June 2026 release.

17.    What environments is Employee Slate available in? PDIs?

Currently Employee Slate is only available in ServiceNow Commercial data centers. Support for regulated/GCC environments, AWS, and Azure is coming soon. It is currently not available for PDIs.

18.   For customers without Now Assist or AI licensing, what is the recommended approach?

Customers not currently licensed for AI capabilities should continue to leverage Employee Center for their employee experience. Employee Center remains fully supported and maintained for this segment.

Specialized Assistants

Purpose-built AI assistants for specific domains or personas, configured and deployed through the Moveworks platform.

In our May 2026 release, this includes ‘World Knowledge’ – a secure, governed GPT app within Employee Slate for general reasoning, creativity, and web-search-backed answers. Keeps employees from switching to consumer AI tools for general queries.

Moveworks Notifications

Moveworks-native notifications surface directly in Employee Slate navigation. Users can take inline follow-on actions (e.g., approvals) from within the notification. Configurable from ServiceNow or any third-party platform.

Catalog – Agent Studio Slot Filling

Admins configure Agent Studio plugins so the Moveworks assistant gathers catalog inputs conversationally and submits requests automatically—without a form-based fallback.

Per-user UI language and assistant/search language selection. Users can connect personal content connectors (Slack, Outlook) that require user-level authentication.

21.   What additional capabilities are included with Employee Slate for Now Assist?

Employee Slate for Now Assist includes the following additional capabilities. These are planned to be extended to Employee Slate for Moveworks in future releases.

Additional Capabilities

Description

Bi-directional page-chat interactions

The Now Assist assistant has in-context awareness of the current page or content open on the split view, and it can take actions based on the page from within the chat panel—without navigating away.

Examples of this include:

·       Conversational Inbox Filtering: Filter and update tasks through natural language while viewing the Inbox. AI-driven prioritization surfaces the most important items first.

·       Conversational Org Chart: Ask about direct reports or team members in chat. The assistant returns results and clicking a profile opens the full Org Chart in split view.

Enhanced agentic experience with widgets

Now Assist AI Agent Tools can be configured to return text/markdown or widgets. Out-of-the-box agents for tasks, requests and people return relevant widgets for related queries. Users can interact with the widget, open details in the split view or pin widget responses to their canvas. Customers can develop widgets to associate with their custom AI Agents e.g.  an analytics agent can return a chart visualization.

Suggested Prompts on Home Page

Suggested Prompt Recommendations based on Promoted Assets from Now Assist. Admins can setup and associate Agents as suggested prompt recommendations by promoting them in Assistant Designer.

Agentic Catalog – Conversational Request

Employees describe what they need; the agent identifies the right catalog item, collects required inputs conversationally, and submits the request automatically.

Additionally, The notifications on Employee Slate for Now Assist experience are ServiceNow Platform notifications (similar to what exists for Employee Center).

22.   Does Employee Slate for Moveworks also have in-context page awareness?

Bi-directional use cases are not supported in the initial version of Employee Slate for Moveworks. It is on the roadmap to introduce it with Moveworks, similar to Now Assist.

  1.  Will existing Concur, Workday, or other third-party integrations work with Employee Slate?

Yes. Existing connectors and configurations will be applicable to Employee Slate as well. Moveworks also has a marketplace of pre-built integrations for common enterprise systems.

24.  Can VA NLU Topics be leveraged within Employee Slate for Now Assist?

VA NLU topics are not supported in the Now Assist version embedded in Employee Slate. We recommend leveraging LLM topics instead, which offer a simpler creation and management experience.

25.  Does Employee Slate also provide agentic content-creation experience (e.g., drafting emails or reports)?

Yes. Moveworks’ World Knowledge functionality within Employee Slate supports content generation, web searches, and general knowledge questions — including report creation, email drafting, and more.

26.  Are there any data model prerequisites for Employee Slate?

No. Employee Slate uses your existing knowledge, catalog, and ACL configurations — no new data model setup is required.

27.   How is popular content surfaced ? Can we silence or exclude certain popular content from surfacing?

Popular content is surfaced based on your organization's activity over the last 30 days. It is a company-wide ranking, based on most viewed knowledge article and most requested catalog item. There is no option to suppress specific items at this time.

28.  What is the mobile experience for Employee Slate at launch?

For the May 5th release, a mobile web version of Employee Slate is available out-of-the-box with no extra configuration required. A dedicated AI-native companion mobile app is planned for H2 2026.

29.  What analytics and reporting capabilities are available out of the box?

Employee Slate will include User Experience Analytics (UXA) that tracks clicks on specific widgets and page elements, going beyond standard page views. Both Moveworks and Now Assist include AI quality dashboards for monitoring conversational performance.

30. What content publishing capabilities are available at launch (May 2026)?

The initial release supports actionable announcement banners that link to KB articles, catalog items, and/or external links. A comms authoring role is required to create and publish. Authoring is now inline within the portal — no backend login required. Knowledge article authoring remains on the backend via the recently released enhanced knowledge editor.

31.    Will Employee Slate support a browse experience for employees who prefer structured navigation?

Employee Slate is a conversation-first experience. A traditional browse experience is not available in the initial release.

32.  What languages does Employee Slate support at launch?

The Employee Slate app interface at V1 launch will be available in 7 languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese. Additionally, Moveworks can translate knowledge on the fly to 100+ languages and search files in 100+ languages.

Configuration and Administration

What configuration options are available with Employee Slate.

33.  Will existing catalog client scripts, policies, and catalog variables work in Employee Slate?

Yes. Catalog items with scripts, macros, and custom UIs will work in the new experience. If a catalog form cannot be handled conversationally, it will open automatically in the split view.

34.  Can employees personalize their experience? Can admins control what employees see?

Yes. Employee Slate includes a personalized canvas where users can pin frequently used widgets from the widget library and modify the layout to their preferences. Admins can define the default layout. Updates to the default layout will not override a canvas that has already been personalized. Employees will have the ability to reset their canvas to the default layout.

35.  Can admins design different canvas views for different roles or business units?

No, admins can make different widgets available for specific audiences, but cannot create separate canvas views for a given user.

36.  Can we build custom widgets for Employee Slate?

Yes. A widget builder will be available, and the source code of OOTB Lit widgets will be accessible for reference. The new tech stack supports vibe coding for custom widget creation — with no dependency on Service Portal widgets.

37.  Will custom corporate fonts be supported?

Custom fonts are not supported in the initial release.

38.  Will there be a theme with access to CSS records, similar to Employee Center?

For the initial release, administrators can configure a logo, primary color, accent color, and neutral palette.. Admins can leverage the live preview feature to preview the light/dark and web/mobile visualizations based on the attributes set. There is no need to manage full CSS files.

39.  Can Employee Slate be deployed as a unified experience across two ServiceNow instances?

No. Employee Slate is tied to a particular instance. However, Moveworks can connect with two ServiceNow instances at the same time.  Organizations using Employee Slate with Moveworks embedded inside would benefit from the conversational responses to be aware of content across both instances. Content coming from the second instance would link out from Employee Slate and open in a separate tab.

Migration and Adoption Considerations

The future of Employee Center and EC Pro, support timelines, migration paths, and what to do right now.

40. Is Employee Center Pro deprecating? Will it receive new innovations?

ServiceNow’s product strategy for employee experience is geared towards Employee Slate, so new features and innovations will be predominantly coming on Employee Slate. Employee Slate will gradually build parity with Employee Center Pro use cases by 2027.

However, there are no plans to deprecate Employee Center Pro, we plan to continue supporting and maintain Employee Center Pro for the foreseeable future. Additionally, Employee Center and Employee Center Pro remain as the recommended portals for organizations not currently investing in AI experiences.

41.    Can we run Employee Slate alongside Employee Center Pro at the same time?

Yes — this is supported and we expect both these experience to run in parallel or coexist till Employee Slate evolves to support all use cases currently available on EC Pro.

42.  Can we leverage any Employee Slate capabilities on exiting EC Pro deployment?

No. EC Pro and Employee Slate are two isolated experiences built on different tech stacks. Features built on Employee Slate's new stack are not available within EC Pro.

43.  Are there any tools available to migrate from EC Pro to Employee Slate? What happens to existing EC widgets?

Since Employee Slate is on a new tech stack, it would be treated as a brand new deployment. Currently, there are no migration tools available, but Employee Slate leverages same configuration tables within the ServiceNow platform as Employee Center. Thus configurations like that of tasks, requests, org chart, and employee profile don’t need to be re-done.

Existing EC widgets will need to be rebuilt for Employee Slate, if not available out of the box.

Employee Slate comes with a widget builder experience where admins can vibe code new widgets.

44. We are planning to go live with Now Assist soon. Should we adopt Employee Slate at the same time?

Yes, you could explore adoption Employee Slate as part of your Now Assist roll-out.

45.  Should we continue investing in topic pages, curated content, and microsites in EC Pro while waiting for Employee Slate parity?

Yes. Employee Center continues to be supported, and customers should continue investing in these experiences within EC for now.

46. What are the best practices for preparing catalog forms and knowledge articles for the new experience?

Existing content doesn’t require any rework to make them available for Employee Slate. We recommend making sure the content is high-quality and well-maintained to ensure AI generated accurate and relevant responses. For catalog and knowledge cleanup best practices, refer to the Employee Center Academy community.

47. When should customers deploy the Now Assist version vs the Moveworks version?

Organizations are recommended to deploy the Moveworks version for the best-in-class employee experience. The Now Assist version is available for scenarios where Moveworks is not yet supported, such as FedRAMP High environments or certain geographies.

48. Are there any pre-requisites that should be validated up front?

Yes, Organizations would need to ensure the below as pre-requisites for deploying Employee Slate:

  • Family release: Zurich Patch 9 (Support for Australia is planned for June release)
  • Infrastructure: ServiceNow Commercial Data Center (Support for GCC, AWS, Azure, and other environments is coming soon)
  • Licensing: Conversation AI powering Employee Slate should be licensed for the scope planned with Employee Slate
  • [For Now Assist]: requires the new off-glide Now Assist enabled (Now Assist for Platform version 11.2.0)

49.  Should customers deploy Employee Center first?

It is not required to deploy Employee Center or Employee Center Pro first. However, since Employee Slate uses the same tables as Employee Center, it is easier to deploy for organizations who already have Employee Center Deployed.

Below are the tables that carry over from Employee Center deployment:

  • To-Dos configurations
  • My request filters
  • Employee Profile
  • Org chart configurations
  • Notifications (for the Now Assist powered experience)

50.  The customer has already deployed Moveworks, would they need to re-do any configurations for deploying Employee Slate?

No, Employee Slate connects and embeds the existing Moveworks capabilities. The only configuration required to deploy Employee Slate with Moveworks.

51.   Has ServiceNow deployed Employee Slate internally?

Yes, ServiceNow has already deployed Employee Slate internally and made it the default experience for a set of pilot users across the organization.
