Upgrading Employee Center to Employee Center Pro

We recently upgraded our license from Employee Center to Employee Center Pro. Our current portal is built on the Employee Center Core application, and we would like to migrate it to New Employee Center Application so that we can fully leverage the new functionalities. What is the recommended approach to achieve this?

Hi Buddy,

The best approach isn’t to try to upgrade your existing Employee Center Core portal in place. ServiceNow recommends standing up the new Employee Center Pro experience separately and then migrating to it in phases.

Start by activating and configuring the new Employee Center application and treating it as a fresh implementation. The underlying architecture is different UI Builder, new content framework, enhanced targeting so most Core configurations and widgets don’t translate cleanly if you try to “lift and shift.”

A practical path looks like:

  • Deploy the new Employee Center Pro portal alongside your current Core portal.

  • Rebuild the foundation first — taxonomy, topics, search sources, and audience targeting.

  • Then migrate content knowledge, catalog items, quick links, announcements and validate how it renders and routes in Pro.

  • Replace any Core-specific custom widgets with supported Employee Center / UI Builder components.

  • Run both portals in parallel for a pilot group, tune search and navigation, and confirm fulfillment flows.

  • Once you reach parity and adoption, cut over traffic and retire the Core portal.

Most teams that try to “convert” the existing portal run into issues with search, navigation, and unsupported widgets. Treating it as a controlled migration to a new experience tends to be far smoother and lets you take advantage of Pro features like improved search relevance, targeting, and journeys.
