I have added additional Mega Menu Items, however I need to know how does one attach content under the Mega Menu items. This could be announcements, catalog items, etc?

please specify your requirements, announcement can be added without touching mega menu:

And the items can be added via taxonomy of the ESC. What is your exact goal?
