Redirecting from Service Portal (/sp) to Employee Center (/esc) Without OOB Message

Hi Team,

We have recently disabled the Service Portal (SP) as part of our migration to Employee Center (ESC).

Currently:

  • When users access any /sp URL, ServiceNow automatically redirects to ESC.
  • However, we were getting the OOB message:

"You're being redirected to Employee Center as the portal you attempted to access has been deactivated."

To improve user experience, we wanted:

  •  Seamless redirect from /sp → /esc
  • No popup/message during redirect
  • Support for deep links (catalog items, incidents, approvals)
  • Ensure notifications and MS Teams chatbot links still work

Hi,

As a reference, ServiceNow provides an official recommendation for this transition in Now Create, within the “Employee Center - Process Workshop Presentation.pptx” material.

That deck includes a slide titled “Service Portal to Employee Center: Migration steps”, which outlines the recommended approach for moving from Service Portal to Employee Center.

The process includes, among other steps:

  • Comparing the existing experience with the new Employee Center experience.

  • Identifying existing widgets, content, and customizations.

  • Updating URLs to minimize user impact, for example:

    • /sp to /sp_legacy

    • /esc to /sp

  • Using page route maps to redirect legacy custom pages or landing pages to the appropriate pages in the new portal.

  • Reviewing required configurations such as the Employee Center menu, footer, branding, activity configurations, and additional widgets.

I would recommend checking that presentation in Now Create and making sure you are using the latest available version, in case ServiceNow has updated the process or guidance since then.

Hope that Helps!
