Can we create a user-friendly card/tile-based selection UI using Record Producer

Hi Community,

We have a requirement to make our leave request experience more user-friendly in our custom ServiceNow portal. Instead of presenting users with a regular form and a standard list/drop-down of leave types, we would like to provide a more intuitive and visually engaging experience.

As a first step, we would like to ask the user:

“Which leave would you like to request?”

The options could be:

• Maternity Leave
• Parental Leave
• Study Leave
• Care Leave

Ideally, we would like to display these options as cards/tiles, similar to the attached screenshot, where each option could have an icon/image, title, short description, and a selection indicator/arrow.

However, the exact design shown in the screenshot is not mandatory. A similar OOB design or any other user-friendly approach that provides a better experience than a traditional form/drop-down would also work for us.

We are currently considering using a Record Producer for this requirement. Our preference is to achieve this using OOB ServiceNow configuration, without:

• Developing a custom Service Portal widget
• Modifying the portal
• Making custom portal-level UI changes

Questions:

1. Is there an OOB way to achieve a card/tile-based or similar user-friendly selection experience using a Record Producer?
2. Can Record Producer variables, variable sets, or other Catalog configurations provide a more visual selection experience than a standard drop-down/radio-button field?
3. Can an Order Guide be configured to provide a similar experience and route the user to the appropriate leave request?
4. Are there any OOB HRSD components or configurations that would be better suited for this type of experience?

The main objective is to make the leave request process more intuitive and user-friendly, while avoiding custom portal/widget development if possible.

Any recommendations on an OOB approach or configuration would be greatly appreciated.

From an OOB perspective, I would not recommend trying to force a Record Producer into a card/tile UI. Record Producer variables can improve the experience with things like choice lists, radio buttons, reference variables, etc., but there isn't a standard OOB variable type that gives you a fully configurable card/tile with icon + title + description + arrow experience.

For this requirement, I would suggest you to look at these options 

1. HRSD ESC Center/ HR Service Delivery(there's a leave request template)

2. Order Guides

3. Custom widget/UI

As per my understanding, there is currently no OOB feature in ServiceNow that provides this exact card/tile-based selection experience for a Record Producer without some level of customization.

Although this type of experience can be achieved using a custom Service Portal widget, it would involve additional effort around the UI design, card alignment, responsiveness across different screen sizes, selection handling, backend functionality, and maintaining the solution going forward.

Considering the requirement to avoid custom widget and portal-level development, I would recommend using an OOB Record Producer with the available Catalog variable types and configurations. It may not provide the same visual card-based experience shown in the screenshot, but it would be a more straightforward, maintainable, and OOB-compliant approach.

If a highly visual card/tile experience is a strict requirement, then custom widget development would likely be required.
