Hello all,

I  am new to CMDB area, Please provide your inputs for below situation.

We have discovered several unidentified assets within the network ,so we need to configure and optimize ServiceNow Discovery to ensure all assets are identified and classified correctly.

How would you configure Discovery to identify and classify all assets accurately?

What challenges might arise in this process, and how would you address them?

Hi,

This is a pretty broad question.

I'd start by figuring out what these assets are. Are they servers, network devices, physical or virtual appliances? Once you can establish that, you can look at the protocols that might be available to discover them - SSH, SNMP etc. It might be as simple as configuring credentials, or it could be something obscure that needs specific patterns developed for it. The ITOM Content library can help for those unidentified SNMP devices, so that might be worth looking at also.

From a challenges point of view, things like virtual appliances throw up a challenge because there is not often a standard way to query them and they are often 'blockbox' type devices that are not designed to have processes digging into the config. Unsupported operating systems can also be a challenge.

The upside is that some of your difficult to discover devices might be managed centrally, so you might find that leveraging integrations is an easier way to get some of those devices into your CMDB.

Hope this helps a little.

Regards,

David
