Hello all,

I  am new to CMDB are, so please provide your inputs on below situation,

Our Configuration Management Database (CMDB) has grown significantly, but there are concerns about data accuracy and completeness , I am  tasked with improving the integrity of the CMDB.

What steps would you take to ensure the accuracy and completeness of CMDB data?

How would you handle discrepancies in the CMDB?

What would be your approach to continuous validation and data reconciliation ?

Your inputs are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi,

That's quite a large question!

It's not uncommon for this question to be asked, but usually requires an engagement and quite a bit of time to understand the problems to help determine some remediation activities.

At a reallly high level, ServiceNow these days has some good tools to help with this. Start by enabling the data collection jobs in the CMDB View dashboard so that you can see where you have Stale and Duplicate data. You can also configure that to help you see where your CIs don't contain all of the data that you require (completeness), but that requires some configuration of the recommended attributes.

Next, make sure you have the latest CMDB Workspace installed. Lots of improvements have been made over the last few versions, so it's important to have it up to date. There is some good data in there also, which will help you identify issues.

Install the "CMDB and CSDM Data Foundation Dashboards" plugin, again this will help to identify issues, and the metrics in these dashboards are linked to playbooks that will help you to resolve some issues.

Once you know what needs to be actioned, you can use tools like de-duplication templates and CMDB data Manager to begin your cleanup as a starting point. CMDB Data Certification in the workspace can also help to provide on-going validation and audit of data.

If you are new to CMDB and Configuration Management in general, there is some training available on NowLearning for CMDB (with micro-certifications). It might also be worth engaging a trusted partner, or ServiceNow themselves to see if they can help you to get started.

Hope this is a point in the right direction for you.

Regards,

David
