How do you identify junk vendor records in the core_company table?

Hi Team,

We are reviewing vendor records in the core_company table and have identified several suspicious entries such as:

  • Person names
  • Hardware model numbers (e.g., KBG40ZNS128G)
  • HTML/CSS/JavaScript text
  • Copyright strings (e.g., "2023 ABBYY Development, Inc. All rights reserved")
  • Generic values like "empty", "(none)", "-1"

We would like to understand the best practice for identifying and cleaning up junk vendor records.

Could you please share:

  1. How do you distinguish between valid and junk vendor records in core_company?
  2. Are there any OOTB reports, scripts, or articles available for vendor data quality cleanup?
  3. How do you trace the source creating these records (Discovery, integrations, imports, MID Server, custom scripts, etc.)?
  4. Before deleting records, what reference checks do you typically perform?

Any recommendations or experiences with vendor cleanup in core_company would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

ahoy @Deebika,

the Company [core_company] table has "Vendor" checkbox, so Companies with this field set to true are considered Vendors.

But to clean them up, it must follow a review of your data and establishing some conventions/policies.

Each organisation has own data so there's no one-size-fit-them-all answer. You can clean Companies-Vendors that have not been used for a particular period of time (e.g. 2 years) or it can be cleaned as per their name, be aware that there is Data Normalisation that allow you to clean the data (example: HP and Hewlett Packard are the same thing).

So it's difficult to give you any advice or suggestion without visibility to your data, perhaps you could share a description what exactly do you want to clean - is it duplicate names, or what is the motivation for a cleanup?
