In ServiceNow, a Tag Governance Policy from a CMDB (Configuration Management Database) perspective refers to a structured approach to manage and enforce consistent tagging practices across CI (Configuration Item) records. This ensures that tagged items in the CMDB are accurate, meaningful, and aligned with organizational policies.

Key Aspects of Tag Governance Policy in CMDB:

1. Purpose of Tags:

Tags are used to classify and group CIs based on specific attributes like environment (e.g., production, staging), application ownership, cost center, or compliance requirements.

Helps in better visibility, reporting, and automation.

2. Governance Policy Components:

Tag Standardization: Defines consistent naming conventions for tags to avoid duplication or ambiguity. For example, use "Prod" instead of variations like "Production" or "P."

Tagging Rules: Establish rules for mandatory tags based on CI type, business owner, or criticality. For instance, all servers must have a tag indicating their business service.

Access Control: Restricts who can create, modify, or delete tags to prevent unauthorized changes.

Audit and Monitoring: Regularly audit tags for consistency and compliance with the policy.

Cleanup Mechanism: Defines processes to identify and remove obsolete or incorrect tags to maintain data quality.

3. Benefits:

Improved CI Management: Tags make it easier to search, filter, and group related CIs.

Enhanced Automation: Policies allow automated workflows (e.g., assigning tasks or approvals) based on tags.

Better Reporting and Insights: Consistent tagging enables accurate reporting and analysis.

Compliance and Security: Ensures critical CIs are appropriately tagged for compliance checks.

4. Implementation in ServiceNow:

Tags in ServiceNow are often associated with CMDB records, allowing admins to implement governance policies directly via tag rules.

CMDB Workspace: Provides insights and dashboards to manage and monitor tag usage.

Automated Governance: Use business rules, data policies, or workflows to enforce tagging standards.

A Tag Governance Policy helps organizations ensure their CMDB is not just populated but also organized and actionable, supporting operational and strategic needs.

Hello Fellow  Friends,

I hope you are doing well

I am gonna share the ask  below from user

Could you please suggest or guide me step by step procedure to accomplish the exact task

"As an Application Service Domain Owner, I want to create and enforce tag policies for database instances and servers to ensure correct tagging for populating application services. Proper tags will help in better management and mapping of application services.

Make sure below point :

1. Tag policies are created and implemented in the production environment.
2. Tag policies are consistently tracked to monitor their application.
3. Implementation of tag policies results in improved tag-based service maps.
4. Tracking reports on tag policy compliance and completion are available for review and analysis.
