In the example shown, the incident is associated to SAP Enterprise Service. When you look at dependencies, you can see more than one impacted item. As you scroll, you may find related applications or services that are also affected. That matters because service impact often spreads across shared platforms.

 

This is also where perspective matters. You might look at the same map through different lenses:

 

  • As a service owner, you care about end-to-end service reliability.
  • As a product owner, you care about what that product offers internally, and how it affects employee experience.
  • In banking, an internal service might bubble up into customer-facing outcomes, like payments or transfer of funds inside a mobile banking app.

 

On the dependency map, you can also see relationships down to infrastructure, such as a database and the computer the service depends on. Those relationships are what make incident impact analysis and SLA severity more defensible.

 

Build foundation data with Discovery, uploads, and environment mapping

 

Service models don't appear by magic. You build them, and in most enterprises you use a mix of automation and manual inventory.

 

A typical approach includes:

 

  1. Use Discovery to automate creation of configuration items where possible.
  2. Upload application inventory manually when needed (often from Excel).
