Agile prerequisite and dependent stories

Is there any ServiceNow functionality that is associated with adding "prerequisite" or "dependent" stories?  Or are these stories used for documentation purposes only?  It doesn't appear that entering these stories controls or forces a conduction upon the original related story.  For example, I would have thought that adding a dependent story would mean that the original story can't be closed until the dependent story is closed but that doesn't appear to be the case....

You can create child sub tasks for the story and when the child subtasks are closed then only the parent story will be closed

Thanks. Yes we are doing that but wondering about the functionality of using "prerequisite" or "dependent" stories.  Is there any out-of-the-box functionality/benefit that comes with using those story types?

You can use the order field to order the stories sequentially to be worked on

We are experiencing the same issue.  Dependent Stories can be completed before the prerequisites.  Is this by design, are Story prerequisites and dependencies just informational? Any answer to paschos question "Is there any out-of-the-box functionality/benefit that comes with using those story types?"
