customizing self-service password reset for secondary email address

I'd like to create a custom verification process that uses a personal email address on file rather than the standard (work) address on file. I looked at the out-of-box "email verification" and honestly can't figure out which part pulls the email from the user table. Can someone point me in the right direction on which script include or "thing" I'd have to tweak for this different field name (u_personal_email)?
