Now the holiday period is approaching I am getting requests from people to give their roles (budget approver, change coordinator etc) to another person - but only for the 2-3 weeks that they are away. I can manually change it on the first day, then change it back on the last day, but surely there is a way to "delegate" for a time period - or is there?
What does everyone else do in these cases?

Hi Elizabeth,
If you go to he Delegates form, you can see two fields "Starts" and "End" which are date/time fields where you can specify the duration for this delegation. If these fields are not present on the form, right click on the form header->Personalize Form Layout->Add these fields from Available to Selected and Save it.
Thanks & Regards,
Hari

I have extended the delegation here so it uses start / end dates and you can choose more options to delegate as well
It also incorporates a dashboard option for delegated tasks too
afraid it is in 5 parts as it was worked on over a period of time and extra capabilities added and I never got around to combining it.
the word doc gives more information and usage

Hi Hari
That leads me to another question - what if the person I am delegating to does not have the necessary role - does that automatically give him the role? How does this affect licensing?
Thanks

Hi Elizabeth,
Only a ServiceNow user can be made delagate, so I think that covers licensing. If he doesnt have access to the instance, he cannot be a delegate. There are two types of delagation Service and Role. You can read about these in detail bellow. According to the type of requirement that you have, you can choose which one you need.

Hope this helps
