By front end do youmean portal?
if so then
Look for Service Portal >> Portal from application navigator.
In the list layout add Knowledge base column. Look for the appropriate portal & remove knowledge base which is populated or change it as you need.

Can't you just use permissions so it is still available in portal view but only to internal users (or users you want to be able to see it? We have a knowledgebase for our Service Desk team that is not visible to other users.

could use that to limit who sees it available on the portal but not restricting it entirely from showing up on the portal.
For what it's worth, I do prefer your recommendation as that is how we implemented it at our company.
