My library Knowledge Sources To Go is very popular, but it was intended mainly as a thematically grouped guide to standard sources and was provided by me as a PDF file. For certain topics, however, there is so much content that I can no longer include it in that document, as it cannot continue to grow forever.
For this reason, I have decided to handle such topics in individual community articles like this one instead.
What is Domain Separation?
Domain separation allows you to separate data, processes, and administrative tasks into logical groupings called domains. You can then control aspects in each domain, including which users can see and access the data.

The information in this Success Insight describes different ways to implement ServiceNow. We don’t intend for you to use this document as a decision-making tool - instead, it’s critical that you consult with your ServiceNow implementation partner before you make a decision.

Application Support for Domain Separation
Many ServiceNow applications support domain separation in the base system, but not all. Some supported applications include limitations on the data and administrative settings that can be domain-separated. These definitions delineate the domain separation support levels from the perspective of actual use cases and the people who use them.

Domain Separation, part 1: Do I need it? What are the alternative options?
At Knowledge19 I was a member of the Genius Lounge staff for the Domain Separation topic. Many customers were coming and asking about Domain Separation, how to apply it in their companies. From the discussions I have often seen that they actually do not need Domain Separation. They saw it as a solution for their internal issues in the cooperation among different business units. This experience has insipired me to write series of Community artiles around the domain separation. Content of this article expects some level of Domain Separation understanding, at least basic principles and usage.
