There is a version of learning that feels productive. The Now Learning path is open. The progress bar is moving. The micro-certification is loading. You are covering ground, building knowledge, getting closer to the next milestone.
And then you walk into a live implementation.
And you realize, very quickly, that the version of ServiceNow you have been learning about and the version of ServiceNow that exists inside a real organization's instance are two entirely different things!
This is not a criticism of structured learning. Certifications matter. Now Learning paths matter. The PDI matters. I have relied on all of them, and I have written about all of them. But there is a ceiling to what any controlled environment can teach you. And in my experience, the practitioners who grow fastest in this ecosystem are not the ones who have the most certifications. They are the ones who have been exposed to the most real situations, and who have paid close attention to what those situations revealed.
That is what learning in the wild means to me. Not learning without structure. Learning through contact with reality - with all of its messiness, its history, its competing stakeholders, and its imperfect data. The kind of learning that only happens when something goes wrong and you must figure out why.
Every live environment is a curriculum. The question is whether you are treating it like one.
What Wild Learning Actually Teaches?
I have been navigating this ecosystem since 2015. I started with zero platform knowledge - assigned to a ServiceNow Admin team as a fresh recruit in India, told to resolve tickets by following a series of steps I did not yet understand. What I learned in that first year was not primarily from documentation or training. It was from the platform itself: from the things that broke, the configurations that did not behave as expected, and the questions I had to answer without having studied for them.
Over the following decade, across roles as an admin, developer, implementation specialist, and consultant, I have come to believe that there are specific categories of knowledge that only come from real-world exposure. Not incrementally better versions of what structured learning provides. Genuinely different knowledge.
- How organizations actually use the platform -
Not how it was designed to be used, but how it has been configured, customized, and compromised over years of incremental decisions made by people who have since left. Every inherited instance is an archaeology project. Reading it teaches you pattern recognition that no course can replicate.
- How data behaves under pressure -
Sandbox environments have clean, controlled data. Production environments have data that was migrated from legacy systems, maintained inconsistently across teams, and never fully reconciled. Learning how to diagnose what the data is actually telling you-versus what it appears to be telling you, is a skill built entirely through live experience.
- How to be wrong constructively -
In a sandbox, mistakes are free. In a live environment, mistakes have consequences - a frustrated client, a delayed go-live, a loss of trust that takes weeks to rebuild. Learning how to surface problems early, communicate them clearly, and recover from them with credibility intact is a skill that can only be built by actually navigating those moments.
- How people relate to technology change -
Implementations succeed or fail on adoption, not configuration. Understanding why a technically correct solution gets worked around, ignored, or actively resisted is something you learn from the humans in the room, not from the platform.
The SAM Implementation That Taught Me to Question the Source
Let me give you a specific example of what I mean. A few years into my consulting career, I was leading a Software Asset Management implementation. We were configuring SAM Pro for a customer. Discovery was running, the reconciliation engine was active, licence positions were calculating on schedule. From a platform perspective, the implementation was clean. Everything we had built was working exactly the way it was supposed to work.
And then the first reconciliation report landed. And the client did not trust a single number in it.
Adobe Acrobat appeared to be installed on 4,200 devices. The client had licences for 3,800. That is a material shortfall - the kind of number that triggers an audit conversation. The client was alarmed. We were confident the platform was right. So, we dug in. What we found had nothing to do with ServiceNow but with the three upstream data sources feeding the reconciliation engine. The procurement system was incomplete. Software renewals processed through a secondary vendor roughly 600 licences and were not flowing into the main procurement feed. They simply did not exist in the data set we had been handed as the source of truth and the manual software register was 18 months out of date. It listed decommissioned titles, missed recently added ones, and used inconsistent naming conventions that made automated matching unreliable. Nobody had updated it since the previous audit cycle.
So, the reconciliation was accurate. The inputs were not. And until we could reconcile the inputs, the outputs were meaningless, regardless of how correctly the platform had processed them. We spent two weeks rebuilding the data foundation before the licence positions started making sense. We corrected the procurement gaps, updated the software register, and expanded the discovery scope. By the time the numbers were accurate, they were also trusted because we had walked the client through exactly how we had arrived at them.
The platform will only ever be as trustworthy as the data you feed it. That sounds obvious in theory. It is significantly less obvious when you are six weeks into a delivery, and the client is questioning every number on your report.
What It Changed About How I Work
That engagement changed three things about how I approach every SAM implementation since.
Firstly, I treat the first reconciliation run as a diagnostic, not a deliverable. Its purpose is not to produce correct numbers, it is to reveal what we do not yet know about the data environment. Whatever it surfaces, that becomes the work.
Secondly, I document data quality assumptions explicitly in the Statement of Work and revisit them at every milestone. If the inputs change - if a data source turns out to be less complete than we were told , the timeline changes with them. That conversation is significantly easier to have when the expectation was set from the beginning.
And third is that I treat accuracy and trust as separate problems. Getting the numbers right is a technical challenge. Getting the client to believe in the numbers is a communication challenge. The second one often takes longer than the first, and it only starts when you can show your working clearly, not just show your results.
The “Key” Point
I could not have learned any of that from a certification. I could not have learned it from a sandbox. I could not have learned it from documentation, or a Now Learning path, or a well-designed training exercise. I learned it because something went sideways in a real engagement, and I had to figure out why, and the figuring out changed how I thought about an entire category of work.
That is what the ServiceNow ecosystem keeps offering, if you are willing to pay attention to it. Not just a platform to configure, but a curriculum to navigate. Every messy inherited instance, every inconsistent data source, every client who does not trust the numbers - all of it is teaching you something that no course will cover.
The question is not whether the wild classroom is open. It always is. The question is whether you are treating every difficult engagement as the education it actually is !
