I have created a project template and applied it to a project with automatic calculation (also tried with manual). Even when i start the project today in the planned start it gives me these errors when closing the task. The unusual part is that it actually does close the task and change the Planned end date and planned start date and actually closes the task out. Confused on why it would throw the errors but still update the record. and why am i receiving these errors
Cannot change the planned end date of closed task
Cannot change the planned start date of already started / complete task
Invalid update

Not sure about the error.
But there is a property if you visit Project > Settings > Preferences
By default it is No, if you flip it to Yes, it would allow change in planned dates of closed/wip tasks and it won't give error.
Do you have any customizations? Can you attach project xml and steps for us to see it locally.

I had the same issue and had to select "yes" like Arun suggested, but also had to select "yes" for the other property "Enable firing of Business Rules on save from Planning Console. This property has no impact in deferred save mode and in deferred save mode the Business Rules never get fired."
Regards,
Todd

Todd, I tried that but unfortunately it still didn't work. Let me explain the problem in a bit more detail. Refering to the schedule below. Task 1.3.2.3 is currently marked as an ASAP task with a dependency on an earlier task. I want to keep the dependency but change it to be a complete on specific day and then set the start date manually. When I click save, it let's me do that, no error warnings, but when I look back at the schedule it has gone back to the original daye and the task is set to ASAP again.
Now if I try the same with task 1.3.2.4, that has no dependency then it lets me set the start date and does save the change.
In essence, I want to keep dependencies but set start dates manually (effectively including a lag). Does that make sense?

Arun, I did try setting that one, unfortunaely it didn't help. I will pull together some background info to share but will first try the suggestion from Todd. Thanks for the advice.
