Resource capacity vs Resource Availability

Hi,

what is the difference between Resource capacity vs Resource Availability?

Please give an example what would affect either Resource capacity and Resource Availability.

For example I know a resource adding holiday via their calender will reduce the amount of capacity and availability of a resource but what else affects them? Setting a schedule affects both availability and capacity?

Thanks

Dennis

I think of capacity as being relatively static, Dennis. The only way to change capacity is to add more resources, remove them or, as you say change their schedule. But availability is more dynamic based on what work their already assigned to. If a resource has a 40-hour capacity this week but is already allocated 10-hours to a project, their remaining availability is 30 hours. In our case, capacity is mostly consumed by operational duties. We have some resources with a 40-hour/week capacity but are 80% allocated (via Operational Resource Plans) so their availability is only (hope my math is right) 8 hours (20% of 40).

Availability is the duration a resource a available for work. So if a resource works for 8 hrs a day, his weekly availability is 40 hrs.

Capacity = Availability - Allocation.

So if in a week , a resource was available 40 hrs and he was assigned on a task for 25 hrs. His capacity is 15 hrs for that week

Hope this is clear now.

Hi,

Resouce Availability is a combination of spare capacity (during a normal work day) as well as time off from active work (both planned and unplanned).

Resouce Capacity is calculated based on the current workload of an individual and this is a combination of day to day work and some ad hoc requests that needs to be met during the course of a normal work day.

What affects this is given in this link above.

Thanks,
Ashutosh
