SPM/PMO Portfolio/Program/Project Structure

Possibly thinking about restructuring our Project Management Office Portfolio/Program structure.

We currently have two Portfolios (Strategic and Operational) and numerous underlying Programs.

Curious if anyone would be willing to share their structure?

Thanks

We utilize one portfolio and numerous programs and projects.  We use the investment class to separate strategic and operational.

Hi @JBrians ,

Thanks for sharing your setup — it’s always great to see how different teams organize their portfolios and programs.

I’m curious, what’s prompting you to think about restructuring?

Are there particular challenges with the current model, or certain improvements you’re hoping to achieve (like better visibility, alignment with strategy, or smoother program management)?

Knowing a bit more about what’s driving the change might help others in the community share more targeted insights or examples from their own experiences.

Looking forward to hearing more !!

Have a Great Friday!!

Thank You!

Hi Namita, great questions. One team managed the Strategic portfolio, which included higher level projects and had a Project Manager assigned. Another team managed the Operational portfolio (my team), for smaller projects and the Systems Managers acted as the PM.

These two teams combined recently and are looking consolidate processes.

There is also some confusion around the word "Operational" as well. Some think of it as only Run or Keep The Lights On (KTLO) type work, but that's not always the case.

To Leadership, it doesn't matter if it's Strategic or Operational, they are all projects and the work needs to get done.

Hope this helps.

Hello, I would be interested, what would be your view on the use case, when the customer would like a project to be part of two programs (e.g. one primary and one secondary)

Thank you
