I am new to ServiceNow and interested in a career as a developer. What skills should I focus on first?

The first focus should be to understand what is servieNow and its core platform features. Once done you can start with Admin part and javascript. 1. Create Your PDI which is free to do hands on practice . To create pdi check below link

2. Create account on  ServiceNow Learning Platform to do and explore different module like ITSM , ITOM, HRSD, CSM etc

3. Do free micro - certificate provide by ServiceNow on ServiceNow Learning.

4. Pick any youtube channel and start learning and do practice on your PDI  like as you are new so explore ITSM module . below channel helps you from scratch with good example

5. Create a profile on ServiceNow community to learn and explore real time use cases .
