CSM Certification and the Developer portal

Hey team,

Quick question regarding preparation for the ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) exam.

I’m currently going through the CSA course and want to leverage the ServiceNow Developer Portal  effectively as a hands-on sandbox alongside the training.

For those who have recently taken or passed the CSA, what is the best way to utilize the Developer Portal during study? Specifically:

  • Personal Developer Instance (PDI) Setup: Is there a specific release version (e.g., Washington DC / Xanadu) recommended for the current CSA blueprint, or should I stick to the latest default?

  • Guided Learning & Modules: Are there specific Developer Portal learning plans or lab guides that map cleanly to the CSA exam domains (User Administration, Data Schema, Automation, Incident/Change, Service Catalog)?

  • Instance Management: Any quick tips/best practices on managing the PDI (keeping it from hibernating, loading sample data safely) so it doesn't interrupt study flow?

Appreciate any advice or recommended workflows you used to get solid hands-on practice before taking the test!

Tanushree summed it up perfectly, do not rely on exam dumps and memorizing answers as you will not be able to apply the skills to real life scenarios in a job situation. I have come across this several times where people obtained the certification with no knowledge of how it actually applies in a work setting.

I'm a hands on learner.  Being a mechanic I like to see the problem then figure out the why the issue happen.  The one thing I struggle with is, if I am using the right solution?  I want to learn from my mistakes.  I have used resources that do not explain what you did wrong.  And then explain to you why the solution they give you is the correct one.  And Thank you for all the advice Tanushree Maiti and James Morrison.

PDI is also good way to do hands on learning but unfortunately eg. AI related features and some others are not available in PDI. Some of those missing features might be available via academy courses where lab instances are available but quite often you still need to relay on servicenow documentation. Also some new features like new Workspaces require plugin activation before those can be used in PDI and unfortunately noticed some of them might get messed up with dependencies like Discovery Admin Workspace eg. requires: Microsoft Teams Graph Spoke -> Installation blocked) so before updating those plugins to the newest ones check carefully dependencies or like in this case whole installation is blocked because that Teams spoke not available for PDI.
