Blog: Are ServiceNow Micro-Certifications Worth It? My Strategy to Earn n number Badges Efficiently

Hello ServiceNow community 👋

With so many micro-certifications available today, a common question is:

➡️“Are they really worth it?”
➡️“How should I plan to complete them effectively?”

Having completed 15+ micro-certifications alongside my CSA, CAD, and CIS-ITSM, here is my honest experience, strategy, and recommendations.

Why I started micro-certifications

When ServiceNow launched micro-certifications, I saw them as:
Focused, quick learning paths to explore new platform features without committing to long courses.
A way to stay updated with the ever-evolving Now Platform, especially in AI, automation, and UI areas.

My top 5 micro-certifications (and why)
1. Integration Hub
• Helped me implement Flow Designer integrations with external systems confidently.
2. Virtual Agent
• Built bots for common ITSM tasks (password reset, incident status), enhancing user experience.
3. Predictive Intelligence
• Understood ML capabilities like auto-categorisation and assignment, boosting automation solutions.
4. Performance Analytics
• Learned to create actionable dashboards for management and stakeholders efficiently.
5. Service Portal Fundamentals
• Improved my portal design skills, leading to more intuitive user experiences.

My strategy to complete them efficiently

1. Align with current projects.
If I’m working on Virtual Agent, I prioritise its certification immediately to apply learning in real-time.

2. Dedicate focused slots.
I block 1-2 hours daily for 3-5 days per micro-certification. Their concise nature fits well into this plan.

3. Practice in Developer Instance.
For each module, I practice in a PDI to build confidence beyond theory.

4. Take notes with key screenshots.
I maintain a Notion page with condensed notes for quick revision before exams.

5. Share learnings as posts or demos.
Explaining concepts to others solidifies understanding and contributes to the community.

Are micro-certifications worth it?
Yes, but only if applied practically.

They:
• Strengthen your resume with niche skills.
• Build confidence to explore new modules.
• Keep you updated with latest platform releases and features.

However, they do not replace full certifications like CIS, which remain crucial for implementation roles.

My upcoming plan
My focus areas for the next quarter:
1. AI Fundamentals
2. GenAI Controller
3. AI Search
4. Automated Test Framework (ATF)
5. Event Management Fundamentals

If you are starting your micro-certification journey, prioritise what adds immediate value to your projects and career goals. Consistent learning is the key to mastery.
