Automated Scripted Factors

Is it possible to take yes/no variable fields or checkbox variable fields and turn them into numbers for scripted factors? If so, anyone have a sample script to try out?

I want to take a non-number (like the yes/no or checkbox) field from another table, convert that information to a number to use the automated scripted factors.
