Possible to tryout Stream Connect for Apache Kafka/Workflow Data Fabric on subprod instance/PDI?

Background:
my company seeks to implement Kafka topics as source of data provision. The company Kafka solution can not be used with REST. Following the data sheet, dev team sees Stream connect as part of Workflow data fabric as possible solution and wants to model it on a subprod instance (best case) or PDI (worst case).
What are your experiences?
