Enterprise model and asset classes
Summarize
Summary of Enterprise model and asset classes
The Enterprise Asset Management application in ServiceNow supports enterprise model and asset classes that extend the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) class hierarchy. These classes include detailed descriptions, identification rules, and dependent relationships essential for structuring enterprise asset data. To utilize these extended classes, customers must install the Expanded Model and Asset Classes application from the ServiceNow Store.

Enterprise model and asset classes are organized in hierarchical structures where child classes inherit attributes from parent classes. The application links enterprise model classes and asset classes through model categories, facilitating organized classification and management.
Supported Enterprise Model Classes
The primary model class is the Enterprise good model (snentmodel), extending the base Product model (cmdbmodel), along with Firmware model and Discovered firmware model classes. The Enterprise good model includes several industry-specific child classes designed to classify assets across diverse sectors such as medical, facility, transportation, industrial, retail, tactical equipment, construction, wearable, multimedia production equipment, system and smart cards, and payment cards.
Notable specifics include:
- Medical Device Model: Includes unique Product Instance Identifier (PID) configurations that link assets, configuration items, and inventory by serial numbers or parent relationships to ensure accurate tracking.
- Classification Update: Beginning with the Zurich release, the classification data for enterprise goods has moved from a deprecated field in the Enterprise good model table to the Product model table.
- Consumable Models: Consumable models are not classified through the base CMDB Consumable model but can be manually set by marking the Model type as Consumable on the enterprise model record.
Supported Enterprise Asset Classes
The Enterprise asset class (snentasset), extending the Base asset class, is the parent for industry-specific asset classes that mirror the model classes. These include medical assets, facility assets, transportation assets, industrial assets, retail assets, tactical equipment assets, construction assets, wearable assets, multimedia production equipment assets, and system and smart card assets.
Additionally, the Linear asset class (sneamlinearasset) and its child Linear segment class allow classification of specific sections of linear assets, supporting more granular asset tracking.
Practical Implications for ServiceNow Customers
- Installing the Expanded Model and Asset Classes application enables access to extended enterprise models and assets tailored to various industries.
- Understanding the hierarchical structure and classification supports accurate asset tracking, relationship mapping, and lifecycle management.
- Customers managing medical device assets benefit from PID configurations that uniquely identify and link asset data across systems.
- Manual reclassification may be required when upgrading certain medical device classes to maintain correct asset categorization.
- Consumable asset designation requires manual configuration, offering flexibility in asset type management.
The Enterprise Asset Management application supports enterprise model and asset classes that extend base classes within the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) class hierarchy. These extensions include class descriptions, identification rules, and dependent relationships.
To access enterprise model and asset classes in the Enterprise Asset Management application, you must install the Expanded Model and Asset Classes application from the ServiceNow® Store. For more information on this application, see Expanded Model and Asset Classes.
Enterprise model and asset classes form the structural backbone of the Enterprise Asset Management data model. These classes are organized into class hierarchies, in which child classes extend their parent classes and inherit all parent attributes. The Enterprise Asset Management application establishes relationships between enterprise model classes and enterprise asset classes through model categories. For more information on model categories, see Model categories.
Supported enterprise model classes
| Enterprise good model child class | Description |
|---|---|
| Medical model [sn_ent_medical_model] |
Classifies medical-based enterprise models, such as ER Medical Cart Kit and ECG Electrodes. |
| Medical device model [sn_ent_medical_device_model] |
Classifies medical device-based enterprise models, such as Blood Pressure Monitor and MRI Patient Table. Note: When you upgrade to version 1.2.0 or later of the Expanded Model and Asset Classes application, the application
automatically runs the Update medical device category fix script to associate the Medical Device model [sn_ent_medical_device_model] class with the existing Medical device model category. However, you may need
to manually reclassify existing enterprise models under the Medical device model category from the Medical model [sn_ent_medical_model] class to the Medical Device model [sn_ent_medical_device_model] class. Refer to KB1182183 for detailed instructions. Product Instance Identifier (PID) which is a unique and common identifier that links the asset, CI, and IBI classes is generated for the assets of Medical Device model category. PID is generated based on the PID configurations applicable for the Medical Device model category. The Product Instance Identifier Configurations [product_instance_identifier_configuration] table stores the PID configurations. By default, the following configurations are available:
When many PID configurations are associated with the Medical Device model category, the configuration with the highest priority is considered first during the generation of the PID. The PID - Serial number configuration is mostly given the highest priority. |
| Medical drug model [sn_ent_drug_model] |
Classifies medical drug-based enterprise models, such as Amoxicillin and Prilosec. |
| Facility model [sn_ent_facility_model] |
Classifies facility-based enterprise models, such as HVAC Split System and Wire Shelf. |
